Urgent Cyber Alert
Urgent Cyber Alert: The New Wave of “Single-Click” Email Threats
At Sunset Technologies, we’ve spent more than a decade focused on cybersecurity, and we have issued an urgent warning about a new, highly sophisticated email threat.
This new variant is designed to leverage your trust and bypass traditional defenses—all it takes is a single click.

The New Social Engineering Trap
This new threat combines high-level deception with a compelling request, specifically targeting the busy workflows of medical practices:
- Impersonation: The email appears to come from a trusted source, like a known referring provider or business partner.
- The Pretext: The message requests you to click a link or download an attachment, often claiming the files (forms, records, or images) are “too large to fax” or that the sender is “having trouble with the online form.”
- The Danger: Clicking that single link or attachment activates the destructive code, which installs malware that provides cybercriminals with immediate, remote access to your network. This threat is capable of bypassing some traditional anti-virus and firewall protections.
3 Critical Steps Your Team Must Take Now
Your team’s vigilance is the most essential layer of defense. This is a critical best practice that is more important than ever:
- DO NOT CLICK. VERIFY FIRST.
-
- Be highly suspicious of any unsolicited links or unexpected downloads.
-
- If someone requests you download files via a new link, independently verify their identity. Call a known, trusted phone number for the referring office to confirm the request is legitimate. Do not use a reply-to number in the suspicious email.
- USE SECURE WORKFLOWS ONLY.
-
- Require patients and referring providers to use your established, secure portals and processes for sharing any protected health information (PHI). Do not deviate from your established, safe procedures.
- REPORT IMMEDIATELY TO SUNSET.
-
- Possible cyberattacks or suspicious emails should be reported immediately to your Sunset Technologies support team. Do NOT forward the email, take a screenshot and send it to your support team.
As we continue to monitor and investigate this new threat, we’ll keep you updated and share additional best practices.
Rest Assured, Sunset remains vigilant in our efforts regarding cyber security.
